Tennis bets for beginners

· Updated

Match winner, sets, game handicap. How a retirement clause can undo an accumulator the sheet cannot save.

Tennis is a two-horse race that lasts three hours. Most beginners start with a match winner. That is a single. Sets betting is the same idea on a shorter sentence: Nadal to win a set 6–3. Handicap games gives one player a head start in the game count so a short-priced favourite is not 1/8 on the slip. The coupon has a lot of hats for two people and a court. They are still singles until you chain them.

An accumulator across four first-round matches is four names and one stake. One retirement can void a leg or settle it as a loser — read the book’s tennis rules before you build the ticket. The walkover clause is not a rumour. It is a paragraph the shop wrote for the afternoon a body stops. The accumulator sheet will not save you from a walkover clause. It will tell you what four prices multiply to. You still have to live with the rules on the other side of 6–3.

The other side of the room

Laying a favourite on the exchange is common here because the price shortens the longer they stay on court. You are not buying a number from a spread firm. You are being the book for someone who thinks the favourite still has a set in them. Back in fractions, lay in decimal, on the back and lay sheet. Commission on that lay is on the commission page. The room takes a cut of the profit. It does not take a hat off the scoreboard.

Does a tennis retirement void my accumulator?
It depends on the book. Some void that leg, some settle it as a loser. Read the tennis rules before you build a four-fold.
