Types of bet, from the start

Single, accumulator, Lucky 15, each-way, spread, teaser. The hats a price wears, with the calculators that do the counting.
A bet is a price on a named result. The shop prints the price. You name the stake. If you are right they pay the price. If you are wrong they keep the stake. Everything else on a Saturday coupon is that sentence wearing a hat.
Three hats cover most of what people actually strike. A single is one name. An accumulator — America says parlay — is one stake through two or more names, and every name must win. A full cover (Trixie, Lucky 15, Yankee) is every combination of those names at a unit stake on each line, so one loser does not always kill the ticket. The coupon will sell you all three before the first race. This desk will keep the labels honest.
Work it once with numbers. 5/2 is decimal 3.50. 6/4 is 2.50. A £10 double returns 10 × 3.50 × 2.50 = £87.50. A £1 Lucky 15 on four evens names, all win, returns £80 because there are fifteen bets, not one. The accumulator sheet and the full-cover sheet do that counting so you do not have to keep Pascal in your coat. The sheet multiplies. You still have to be right about the names. That is the whole Saturday.
Win, place, each-way
Win, place and each-way have their own page. So do spreads, exchanges and teasers. This page is the map. The hats below are the ones the coupon actually wears. Click through if you want the worked example, not the slogan.

The same three hats show up everywhere. The market names change. A forecast is a racing hat. A 1X2 is a football hat. A teaser is an American hat on a parlay. Each of these is a beginner page for one sport, with the calculators that page actually needs. This desk has not invented a fourth hat for you. It has just put the right sheet under the one you already struck.

Asked this way
- What is the difference between an accumulator and a Lucky 15?
- An accumulator is one bet. Every leg must win. A Lucky 15 is fifteen bets on four names, so one loser can still leave doubles standing.
- What does each-way mean?
- Two bets on the same name: one to win, one to place at a fraction of the odds. It doubles the stake you put down.
- bet365.com is taking 340 jobs. The letter says tax. The floor says models. ·
