How a bet works
Beginners ·
Types of bet, from the start
Single, accumulator, Lucky 15, each-way, spread, teaser. The hats a price wears, with the calculators that do the counting.
Beginners ·
What a single actually is
One name, one price, one stake. The bet every other ticket is made from.
Beginners ·
Accumulators and parlays
One stake through every name. Britain says accumulator. America says parlay. One loser and the ticket is paper.
Beginners ·
Win, place and each-way
Win is first. Place is the frame the book printed. Each-way is both, and it doubles the stake.
Beginners ·
Sports spread betting
You buy or sell a number. Every unit the result moves is money. Not a 5/2, not an NFL teaser.
Beginners ·
Betting exchanges: back and lay
The other side is another punter. You can lay as well as back. The house takes commission on the profit.
Beginners ·
Teaser bets
An American parlay that buys points off the spread. Easier legs, worse price. Not sports spread betting.

Horse racing ·
Horse racing bets for beginners
Win, each-way, forecast, tricast, Rule 4 and the Lucky 15 people take to Cheltenham. With the sheets that count the lines.
Football ·
Football bets for beginners
Home, draw, away, then the Saturday accumulator. Correct score, both teams to score, and why a Trixie survives one upset.
Greyhounds ·
Greyhound bets for beginners
Six traps, forecasts and tricasts. The same racing bets as the horses, on a clock that does not wait.
Tennis ·
Tennis bets for beginners
Match winner, sets, game handicap. How a retirement clause can undo an accumulator the sheet cannot save.
Golf ·
Golf bets for beginners
Outrights, each-way on a major, and the dead-heat rule when four names tie for two spots in the top 10.
Cricket ·
Cricket bets for beginners
Match winner, top bat, totals. Rain and DLS are the clauses. The accumulator is the same sheet as Saturday football.
Rugby ·
Rugby bets for beginners
Match, handicap, totals. Why −7.5 exists, and why a Six Nations Lucky 15 still has doubles if one favourite goes.
NFL ·
American football bets for beginners
Spread, money line, total. A teaser buys points. A parlay is an accumulator in another hat.
Boxing ·
Boxing and MMA bets for beginners
Fight winner, method, rounds. A draw is usually a void, not a loser. Accumulators still die on one undercard.
Darts ·
Darts bets for beginners
Match winner, 180s, handicap legs. Ally Pally is a four-fold waiting to happen. Same sheets as football.
Desk
The desk ·
bet365.com is taking 340 jobs. The letter says tax. The floor says models.
Stoke, Malta, Gibraltar. A light look at a heavy letter — what the company told staff, what the papers ran, and why 3 per cent is still 340 Mondays.
Disputes ·
When the book will not pay
Software glitch, pending investigation, or the company is gone. What your rights actually are, what Betfred and William Hill did in public, and which door is real.
AML ·
Source of wealth, source of funds
Source of funds is this deposit. Source of wealth is the pile. What Sky Bet and William Hill ask for, how long they keep it, and the Commission cases that made the letter exist.
The desk ·
VIP managers: help or delay
A named host can walk a Festival ticket to trading. The same host can sit on a withdrawal and call it service. How to tell the two apart.
The desk ·
Who owns Betway in 2026
Super Group on the New York tape. Betway is the sports word. Spin is the casino stack. Africa and International are how they now file the accounts.
The desk ·
What the 2026 people list actually named
iGaming Express ranked one hundred names. We used the companies behind them, not the ranking. Studios stayed off the index.
The desk ·
Who takes a proper stake
Winning-customer commission, the old agent’s cut, syndicates, and who still takes a Festival ticket. UK desk first. Then America, Europe, Asia.
Exchanges ·
How exchange commission actually works
The house does not take 5/2. It takes a cut when you leave richer. What Betfair, BetDAQ, Matchbook and Smarkets actually charge.
Settlement ·
Dead heats and Rule 4
Two noses on the line, or a horse that never ran. The stake gets sawn. The winnings get taxed. The price on the slip stays put.
Bets ·
Accumulator, parlay, Trixie, Lucky 15
One stake through every leg, or fifteen bets that still pay if one is beaten. Pascal did the counting. The book just named it Lucky 15.
Trust Index ·
Traffic is not trust
A crowded website is not a trustworthy book. What moves the ring, what is kept off it, and why a visit only breaks a tie.
